11th February 1889 – 13th May 1975

Ann Maria Hill (also known as Sarah Ann) was born to her parents, Harry and Ellen on Monday, 11th February 1889.

I know nothing about Ann’s early life. She married Lawson Butler on Saturday, December 11th 1915 at the Primitive Methodist Church, Hill Street, Brierley Hill. This church was closed in the 1960s when it was combined with other Methodist churches in the area. On her marriage certificate, her birth name was shown as Ann Maria, but certainly by 1935 she was known as Sarah Ann. Interestingly, on her Baptism certificate, her name was shown as Sarah Ann. I don’t know why there were different forenames. I remember she was also known as Nancy.

According to her marriage certificate, her father,Harry Hill, was a labourer and at the time of her marriage, they were living at 44 New Street, Quarry Bank. This property has since been re-developed. Like many women of the time, Sarah was a ‘housewife’ and did not have a stated occupation.

Later in life, she joined the ‘Good Companions’ club concert party and had a strong soprano voice. Lawson, her husband, used to accompany the concert party on the piano from his large repetoire of songs. This concert party was well known and gave performances over a wide area.
